Sore Muscles? Joint Pain? This ‘Confusing’ Oil May Be Your Best Friend

Sore Muscles? Joint Pain? This ‘Confusing’ Oil May Be Your Best Friend

In all the years we’ve been mixing natural oils at Glowing Orchid, we’ve consistently made sure that the resulting product is safe for intended use. Today’s not the day we break that rule! However, we are going to spotlight a plant extract that has been described as “confusing,” “risky,” and even “poisonous” – but one we genuinely swear by for muscle aches and other body pains.

Say hello to arnica extract. This ingredient can be a godsend for those suffering pain issues even as serious as myalgia. But why is arnica controversial? How do you use it to safely enjoy its benefits? Read this handy guide and share it to loved ones who could use it.

What is arnica extract?

Arnica extract is a natural substance derived from the arnica plant (Arnica montana). This plant is a perennial herb that grows to about 1 to 2 feet tall and produces pretty yellow flowers similar to daisies. Native to Europe and cultivated in North America, the plant has featured in traditional medicine since as far back as the 1500s, as a pain reliever for various body aches.

The risky part about arnica is that it contains a compound called helenalin, an irritant that can be toxic if ingested in significant amounts. Effects of helenalin poisoning range from throat irritation to shortness of breath to heart damage. Further, a large dose of helenalin can actually be fatal! Because of this, experts often recommend arnica be applied topically (skin surface only) instead of taken orally.

Now here’s where some people get confused. Some homeopathic products include arnica as an ingredient in tablets, tinctures, or pills – as in products meant for ingestion. There are even arnica teas in some specialty markets out there!

You may think, Why is a potentially lethal ingredient used in pills and teas?
The answer lies in the dosage and proportion. Homeopathic formulations contain extremely small amounts of arnica per dose, and they’re diluted enough to be undetectable by the average human body.

Still, for most of us who are not so familiar with arnica oil, the best way to reap its benefits is to apply it on the skin rather than ingest it.

What are the benefits of arnica extract?

A growing body of scientific literature documents the health benefits of arnica oil or arnica extract:

  • Relieves muscle pain (myalgia), joint pain (arthralgia), and sprains
  • Eases osteoarthritis pain
  • Speeds up the healing of bruises and closed wounds
  • Soothes rashes, insect bites, and other itches
  • Reduces inflammation, including tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.

Seems like an incredible list from a natural ingredient, right? Unsurprisingly, some people are doubtful, especially since arnica isn’t widely explored in modern pharmacology. So people commonly ask: Does arnica extract really work for body pains?

If you ask various scientists, yes, arnica works!

In 2021, researchers conducted a review of herbal therapy studies regarding osteoarthritis. They found that arnica is just as effective as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief and inflammation!

The authors’ amazing conclusion was this: “Arnica presents comparable activity to standard medications, such as ibuprofen and diclofenac, for pain management under different medical conditions. It also shows fewer adverse effects along with lower costs. Arnica could be an adjunct approach for acute and chronic pain management.”

Another study examined the effect of arnica on post-exercise muscle pain and soreness. Participants topically applied arnica on their legs and calves after considerable running exercises. After this application, they reported less pain and muscle tenderness.

How does arnica extract work?

When you first apply an arnica cream on your skin, you may feel a warm, tingly sensation, which already helps dissipate some pain. But this is not where arnica’s real magic happens. The plant’s beneficial compounds work at a cellular and even molecular level, diminishing the inflammation that causes pain and bruising.

And what exactly are these good compounds in arnica? So far, scientists have identified over 150 bioactive components in the plant, primarily:

  • Sesquiterpene lactones – A powerful group of anti-inflammatories, antioxidants, and antimicrobials
  • Flavonoids – Another strong class of antioxidants, more commonly derived from healthy foods like green leafy vegetables and berries
  • Coumarins – A type of anti-inflammatory compounds that are also found to be anticoagulant and antimicrobial
  • Terpenoids – More anti-inflammatories! These substances also have antibacterial and antifungal properties.

According to researchers, these compounds can be extracted from the arnica plant’s flowers, seeds, leaves, stem, and even roots. At Glowing Orchid, we’ve tested first-hand the efficacy of the flower extract, which is why we’ve specifically included it as a primary ingredient in our Muscle Ease roll-on serum.

Who should not use arnica extract?

As lovely as it is to be soothed by arnica extract, in some situations, it is not a suitable remedy, even for topical use. It’s best to avoid this ingredient if you:

  • Have broken skin or open lesions – as the extract could be absorbed through open skin
  • Are allergic to ragweed or similar plants – arnica is in the same family called Asteraceae
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding – you wouldn’t want your baby to be in contact with this potent substance
  • Have a blood-clotting disorder – as the helenalin compound is a potential blood thinner
  • Will undergo surgery within two weeks – your body should be clear of arnica before invasive procedures.

That said, for an average person with normal health, arnica products should be safe to apply and calming on the muscles.

How do you safely use arnica extract?

The safest way to use arnica oil is by getting it as a cream, ointment, or serum and applying it on your skin. Ingesting the extract requires utmost caution.

While homeopathic doses are available for oral intake, these must be prepared by an experienced specialist and extremely diluted to be safe for internal consumption. If you’re not confident about an arnica dose, we would recommend erring on the side of safe and just sticking with topical use.

Even when you’re only applying arnica externally, it’s best to observe how your skin and muscles react to it. It’s possible that a concentrated arnica formula could give you a more burning sensation than a soothing one.

This is why we prefer a nice blend of essential oils to carry arnica extract. Our Muscle Ease roll-on at Glowing Orchid is formulated with coconut oil, sweet almond oil, helichrysum oil, and many more natural ingredients that gently glide on your skin as arnica works its wonders. This formula actually feels more cooling than hot, and that coolness penetrates to relax those tight, achy muscles.

All that is packed in a handy roll-on vial that you can take with you anywhere! Use it after your workout at the gym, after a hike, when sitting for long periods at your desk – pretty much any time you need to loosen those muscles and joints.

Muscle Ease Botanical Roll-on

I hope this quick guide helps you consider arnica as your muscle or joint pain reliever. And one more time, just to avoid any more confusion, it’s best to use arnica oil as a topical remedy – ideally in an essential oil blend. I’m living proof that this method is safe and effective… which reminds me, I need to stock up on our arnica Muscle Ease roll-on for the cold seasons. If you know, you know! 😄

Here’s to happy, healthy, pain-free living!

xx,

Judit
