How Weight Loss Affects Your Skin

How Weight Loss Affects Your Skin

Healthy bodies come in many shapes and sizes.

Some people are naturally slimmer or heavier than other people, but that doesn’t mean that there’s something wrong with their bodies. What can be dangerous to one’s health is losing weight inappropriately.

Health experts claim that unregulated weight loss poses risks to individuals because it may not promote healthy eating habits. It also makes people feel sluggish because some people will avoid certain foods necessary to increase their energy levels. Lastly, inappropriately losing weight can negatively affect the skin, which may influence your self-esteem.

How Weight Loss Affects Your Skin

If you choose to lose most of your weight, there’s a high probability that your skin will start to sag, and fine lines or wrinkles will appear. This happens because when you suddenly lose a massive amount of weight, fat cells and collagen that keep your face firm and plump will start to decrease. However, your skin doesn’t shrink along with your fat cells, which means your skin will begin to fall and sag. Apart from sagging skin, loss of fat deposits in the face will lead to the formation of wrinkles. Another effect of rapid weight loss is acne. The drastic change in your body weight may create a hormonal shift in your body, resulting in an acne breakout. The lack of a nutritional and balanced diet can also affect your skin, which makes them more susceptible to blemishes.

Carrie Madormo explained that skin elasticity, which is composed of collagen and elastin, is what keeps the face plump and healthy-looking. And one of the factors that could affect skin elasticity is an individual’s choice of lifestyle and diet. This is why instead of simply losing weight, you must follow a healthy diet plan that ensures you consume all the nourishment you need without compromising your weight. There are several types of weight loss programs which cater to different individual preferences and health goals.

For example, Madormo said eating protein-rich foods like poultry, fish, beef, dairy products, eggs, and beans helps increase amino acids in the body responsible for producing collagen. Therefore, having a healthy protein-rich diet customized for you will make your weight loss journey convenient while also taking care of your skin. If you want a personalized diet for balancing your hormones, you can choose a hormone diet plan that includes varying food options from vegetables, poultry, and fruits.

Tips On How To Nourish Your Skin

Besides a healthy and balanced diet, there are other ways to take care of your skin, such as drinking more water and keeping yourself clean. Surprisingly, exercising and sweating can also help you have clearer and healthier skin.
In our article on why sweating is important, we discussed how when you sweat, your pores open and release the grit and grime that has built up inside of them. Once they are released, make sure you wash them off properly by taking a shower. This shows how exercising is both beneficial to your physical health and skin.

Moreover, taking care of your skin means using skincare products that are not harmful to your skin. There are numerous organic skincare products like face creams and serums made from raspberry and helichrysum seed oils that are gentle and effective in protecting your skin. When buying skincare products, make it a habit to read their product labels. Examples of chemicals you should avoid are parabens, which cause skin irritations, endocrine disruption, and harm to the reproductive system. Another is siloxanes or silicones, which are compounds considered toxic and harmful to hormone function.
