Face Moisturizing Etiquette: How To Do It Right And Avoid Costly Mistakes

January 14, 2020 1 Comment

Moisturization is a keystone in any skincare routine. I know this firsthand as I live in a cold, dry region (like much of Canada), and it tends to zap the moisture out of my poor skin cells. I’ve had days of dull, blemished complexion which only a good moisturizer could save.

All About Helichrysum Essential Oil: Why We Swear By It As A Key Ingredient

May 20, 2019

If we had to choose just one essential oil as our ultimate favourite for skincare, we’d pick helichrysum oil, hands down. In fact, we already infuse this powerful ingredient in many of our products, and we’ve consistently gotten rave reviews for them. (I myself am one of those who just can’t get enough of helichrysum-infused products!)

Baking Soda vs Baking Soda Free Deodorant?

May 14, 2019

Which one should you choose?

✨Baking soda✨ has been getting so much bad reputation lately and we also noticed the growing demand on the baking soda free version we offer. Baking soda is often associated with bad skin reactions such as red rashes or irritation, and if that happens to you while using a natural deodorant please discontinue use immediately.

Does it mean that in general baking soda/ sodium bicarbonate is the enemy and you should automatically opt for the bs free option? Not necessarily.
Baking soda has amazing antibacterial properties to help control the bacteria that grows in our underarms, which cause odour when they break down sweat.

A well formulated natural deodorant shouldn't contain too much of it though. Baking soda has a pH of about 8 to 8.5, it's alkaline, while our sweat is mildly acidic. At a low baking soda concentration, our sweat neutralizes the alkalinity of the baking soda and dissolves it, so you shouldn't get any irritations. That's why many of our customers even with known baking soda sensitivity have no problem using our original formula.

If you do get bad skin reaction it means that your acid mantle pH level is slightly different, which can be affected by age, gender, race, as well as diet, extreme heat/cold, sun, pollution or even that time of the month for ladies. In that case your choice should be our baking soda free version, however, I would suggest digging deeper and figuring out the main cause of your discomfort, which can truly make the difference between the ability and inability to use this amazingly effective ingredient.

Either way...don't worry, we got you covered so you don't have to go back to antiperspirants or other natural deodorant brands that are not as effective as ours🤗

Ps. If you are wondering that our bs free version works as well as the original formula just read this review or see the feedback under the product page.

Facial Toners: Why You Need To Have One In Your Facial Routine

May 07, 2019

Toners are often misunderstood. Their use is also underestimated, and a lot of people are still unaware of the amazing benefits a great toner provides.

WHAT YOUR TONER SHOULDN'T BE DOING:

Your toner shouldn't sting or dry out your skin like many harsh toxic chemical-filled ones at the store. This isn't an aftershave, after all! Your toner should also not leave your skin alkaline because your skin is naturally between a 5.5-5.9 pH. Instead, a great toner should leave your skin feeling soft, plump and glowy.

Your toner should also be professionally formulated for not only the pH balancing effect, but it should also have an effective preservative to ensure you aren't spraying harmful bacteria all over your face (a big concern in the natural beauty products industry)

The only time a toner shouldn't be professionally formulated is if you are mixing a fresh diy toner that uses an acidic ingredient like ACV for yourself regularly and keeping it refrigerated, and use it within a few days to a week. But who has the time for that hassle these days? You're better off saving time, and getting much better results with a professionally made stable one with loads of beneficial actives that you can't get OTC or find in your pantry.

WHAT A TONER SHOULD DO:

A great toner:

      • Refreshes skin

      • Feeds skin essential building blocks and antioxidants

      • Balances the pH of your skin

      • Reduces the appearance of pores

      • Moisturizes

      • Adds a layer of protection

PRIME BEFORE YOU PAINT? WHY PH MATTERS.

Arguably the most important role of a toner is to balance the pH of your skin after cleansing. Cleansers can dry your skin because they are inherently alkaline. By using a toner you'll bring the pH of your skin back to its natural levels between 5.5-5.9. In other words, by having a great toner in your daily skincare routine, you're serving your skin by giving it a taste and priming and prepping it to better absorb beneficial ingredients from products such as serums and moisturizers. Think of it as a primer you put on before painting a wall. The paint (your serum and moisturizers) will work so much better and effectively after the primer has been applied. Now don't worry, there is hardly any prep involved. No need to lay down a bunch of drop cloths and put on coveralls!

BE LAVISH - WHEN IT COMES TO TONER, MORE IS MORE

As much as we love the beauty of simplicity, and recognize that there are times when less is more, in the case of toner - MORE IS MORE! Since toner is not a rinse off product, we jam-packed our formulation by loading each bottle with beneficial acids, antioxidants, cosmeceuticals, and anti-inflammatories so you get as much value as possible from every spritz.

A TONER THAT IS BENEFICIAL FOR ALL SKIN TYPES

A terrifically formulated toner with high-impact and well balanced ingredients can actually serve as a one-stop solution for some people with an oily skin type who are short on time. A couple spritzes after cleansing your face will give your skin a dose of hydration, pH balancing, beneficial cosmeceuticals, tightened pores, and a layer of protection. Is it as effective as a full skin care regimen? No, but if I had to choose one facial staple for someone with oily skin, this would be it. Just like the earlier paint analogy, applying a coat of primer is 10x better than nothing at all.

Our revitalizing facial toner was formulated to be effective for ALL skin types and ticks all the toner checklist boxes.

THE BEST PART: FACIAL TONER IS SUPER CONVENIENT!

Just apply 2-3 spritzes after cleansing your skin and gently pat this fast-penetrating elixir on your face. If using a gel toner, you may spread on your palms, then apply to your face in an upward circular padding motion. You will immediately feel the cool burst of revitalizing hydration similar to quenching your thirst after a strenuous day in the heat. A few seconds later, once your skin has absorbed the toner, you will feel an immediate change in the texture and smoothness of your skin. Hello baby face!

If you'd like to learn more about our Revitalizing Facial Toner we invite you to read the ingredient list which includes Hyaluronic Acid, Biofermented Sea Kelp and more by clicking here! Feel free to cross reference our ingredients with websites like the environmental working group and you'll see our toner(like all our products) is squeaky clean ;)

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR GLOW IN THE FALL?

October 10, 2018

GLOW FROM THE INSIDE OUT

- 5 Tips based on my personal experience-

1.) EAT FERMENTED FOODS

I love fermented foods and drink but don’t consume them year around -ok, except maybe kombucha:) I always listen to my body so I can tell that my higher craving for fermented foods is a reoccurring thing as soon as Fall and the cooler weather arrives. It’s like my body is telling me that I need to strengthen my immune system and get prepared for the winter and the flu season. By eating fermented foods you support your gut bacteria. Why is that good for us? Well, because it is estimated that ~70 % of the immune system lies in the gut so basically gut flora is our immune system, you definitely want to keep it healthy. I just leave a link with a bunch of studies below if you’d like to understand more deeply how healthy gut flora (aka probiotics) plays beneficial role in immunity.

So...Are fermented foods the secret to glowing skin? I would say definitely a part of it! Your gut and skin are both elaborately connected to each other, if something goes wrong with your gut, the symptoms will inevitable make themselves known on your skin ... facial redness, acne, eczema, dry skin and rosacea can all have the same root cause: poor gut health and gut function.

I’m from Hungary and lived close to a village where the tradition of making sauerkraut (the best you have ever tasted!) goes back to the 18th century. No wonder I was so disappointed to try the ones that you can buy at the stores here. It’s not even close to what I remember a sauerkraut should taste. I quickly realised that making your own is easy and fun and I encourage all of you to give it a try, there are so many types of fermented foods you can experiment with. This year I am a kimchi lover, I’m on my third jar since September. I told you, my body is craving for it…:) I follow a quick and simple veganized recipe (email me if interested) and me and my skin are in love with it.

2) STAY HYDRATED

I’m sure you heard this for the nth times but a reminder never harms especially that this is maybe the number one key factor to a healthy radiant, glowing skin. In the Fall/Winter your body can feel less dehydrated than during the hot summer days so unfortunately many people don’t really feel like drinking water. Until a couple of years ago I was definitely one of them and honestly I couldn’t even imagine starting my mornings with a glass of water. Who wants to drink cold and plain tasting water when it’s chilly outside and even sometimes inside anyway? ...That’s what I thought, but today it’s all different and I couldn’t even imagine NOT drinking a huuuge glass of water as soon as I open my eyes (Ok, as soon as I finish using my tongue scraper first). How did I get to that point? I started with a commitment. A commitment, that I drink a glass of hot/warm water with freshly squeezed lemon thru a glass straw first thing in the morning as a part of my morning ritual. Yes, I needed it to be a ritual not just a habit so I can not only stick to it easily but eventually can’t wait and get excited for it(?). Today my morning water doesn’t have to be warm or flavoured with lemon to be appealing for me, but if you just start your commitment I would definitely recommend lemon, ginger or some kind of berries.

Throughout the day I love drinking freshly squeezed juices and tea -I think I could do a whole seperate blog post about all the wonderful, antioxidant full teas out there which are sooo beneficial for the skin. My favourite is still the good old green tea which helped me fighting acne big time. Did you know that there are studies out there providing direct evidence that green tea antioxidants are able to enter the skin and affect the molecular mechanism behind acne? Green tea improves pretty much all the causes of acne (inflammation, insulin and hormones) and not just internally but we can highly benefit from it topically as well -that’s why we also use it in our helichrysum & frankincense ultra light facial crème as well as in our eye crème.

3.) EAT PLENTY OF CRUCIFEROUS VEGGIES

Every year I anxiously wait for the summer when I can finally eat cruciferous vegetables from my garden. Kale is one of my favourites because it grows so well that you can’t really make a mistake, it doesn’t require much attention -except when they get infected with aphids but that’s a different story…So why do I mention it here? Because it is still growing in abundance and will continue throughout the fall months until the first real frost, and sometimes a bit after it. The Beauty Chef swears that these cruciferous vegetables (kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage etc) are a natural “internal skin moisturizer that supercharge your inner beauty routine” and I couldn’t agree with her more. Kale is loaded with vitamin C, A and K which help repair skin tissues, prevent free radical damage, and also gives you a radiant and fresh glowing look. I will definitely freeze some for the hard winter months and hopefully will have enough for the spring as well, but I have been also playing with the idea to grow them inside. What do you think? Have you ever tried growing them inside? Feel free to shoot me a message here/ on Fb/ Instagram if you have any tips for me!:)

4) GET OUTSIDE

I love being outside in the Fall... the colours are just simply beautiful!! I know it is tempting to hide under a blanket on a cold, rainy day but staying active will help boost circulation, keep your pulse rate up and your natural glow intact. Committing to a 30 minute walk every day is super beneficial to maintain your natural radiance. Not to mention how nature can fill your soul up with gratitude and reduce the harmful stress immediately. Bonus if the sun is shining :) Speaking of sunshine….Please do not forget how important supplementing with vitamin D is from fall to spring. If you don’t get adequate sun exposure- and let’s be honest, most of us do not here in Canada- I recommend daily supplementation with 2,000 IU. Vitamin D also plays a role in the creation of new skin cells (a process called differentiation) and without enough of it your skin can struggle to make new cells and could cause it to look dull.

5) REDUCE OVERALL ANXIETY AND STRESS

As the days get shorter and darker people can experience depression and anxiety more frequently - this is why point #4 is so crucial above! Personally I used to feel stressed out or even worried and anxious more during the fall and winter time surprisingly often by little things like it was coded in my genes... For me it resulted in frowning which can over time lead to wrinkles on the forehead... Not a good thing! Luckily I managed to learn several techniques which can help me cope with anxiety and the stressful, rainy, miserable days. Today I share with you my favourite tip which can even result more glowing skin and works on the body, soul and mind: yoga. You don’t have to be a “yogi” to experience its full benefits, with dedication and consistency the results will come sooner than later. I aim to practice yoga every day at home, nothing crazy, sometimes just a 20 min session....(highly recommend the lovely, Canadian Julia aka Boho Beautiful on Youtube). Believe me, even that little time can set your mood for the whole day or help you get a goodnight sleep. What I love so much about is that it forces you to focus on your breathing which can kill anxiety and depression just in seconds. There are some poses that are primarily known as the best for glowing skin, such us the shoulder stand (Sarvangasana) which promotes blood circulation towards your face or the standing forward fold (Utthanasana) that increases oxygen and nutrient supply to the skin fighting inflammation and free radicals that have been known to cause aging.

3.) EAT PLENTY OF CRUCIFEROUS VEGGIES

Well, these were my most important 5 tips...Hope you find this post useful! Let me know if you have any questions or if you'd like to share Your glowing tips for the Fall!

I aim to practice yoga every day at home, nothing crazy, sometimes just a 20 min session.... (highly recommend the lovely, Canadian Julia aka Boho Beautiful on Youtube).

Well, these were my most important 5 tips...Hope you find this post useful! Let me know if you have any questions or if you'd like to share Your glowing tips for the Fall!

xx Judit

Smells so good and works!

I have been using this deodorant for awhile. I love the smell of the Peppermint Lavender! My children use it too. Natural, effective, and Canadian. What's not to love?

As i get older I have become very sensitive to deodorant. I tried a variety of samples and found that none of Glowing Orchids formulations caused a reaction. They also worked great in terms of controlling odour. This one us my favourite scent.
